The tragedy in Mizoram, which resulted in the loss of 23 lives, marks the second unfortunate incident to impact a railway construction site in Northeast India. A similar mishap occurred last year when a landslide claimed 50 lives, burying the under-construction Tupul railway yard and a Territorial Army post in Manipur's Noney district on June 30. Among the victims of the recent bridge collapse, a family from Malda's Pukhuria mourns the loss of six of its members.The accident site near Sairang, the final railhead in the northeastern hill state, is part of a 51.3 km route. In response to the tragedy, Railway Minister Aswani Vaishnaw has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each deceased individual and Rs 2 lakh for those critically injured.Expressing his sorrow, PM Narendra Modi's office shared a tweet, stating, "Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway, and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected."
