He spent over four decades behind bars for a crime he never committed. Now, after finally winning his freedom, the US wants to deport him. Subramanyam Vedam arrived in America as a baby and lived in Pennsylvania his entire life. His conviction was overturned after prosecutors were found to have withheld crucial evidence. But instead of being allowed to rebuild his life, he was transferred straight from prison to an ICE deportation facility in Louisiana. The US immigration system is using a 40-year-old drug case to argue he should be expelled from the only country he has ever known. Two courts have paused the deportation, but the fight isn’t over.
