Amid the uproar over the removal of customs duty on apples imported from the US, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on September 12 said that Centre hasn’t relaxed any import duty but rather Additional import duty imposed on America has been removed. He further added that there is a uniform import duty for all countries. Piyush Goyal said, “When Congress has lost the trust of the public, they feel that if they say anything to confuse the public, it will be sold... No import duty has been reduced. An additional import duty known as retaliated duty was imposed on America which has been removed...To support the production of apples in the country the Modi government imposed a heavy import duty on the apples that are imported...A few months back we also set a minimum import price for the apples...In retaliation to the restrictions imposed by the US on India, due to which our exports were reduced, we imposed retaliatory tariffs on apples. This was a harsh step that we took... Now there is a uniform import duty for all countries.”
