The Supreme Court’s new order on stray dogs has sparked both relief and heartbreak. Petitioner Nanita Sharma, who sought protection from rising dog bite incidents, broke down as the court ruled to remove stray dogs from public institutions and relocate them to shelters. The justices also directed NHAI to clear highways of cattle and stray animals, citing safety concerns. Animal rights activists, including Gauri Maulekhi of People for Animals, criticised the ruling as “sweeping and unworkable,” warning that shelters are overcrowded and relocation violates the Animal Birth Control (ABC) rules. Many institutions like IITs and AIIMS, which have neutered and vaccinated their community dogs, may now face impossible compliance hurdles. The verdict, while aimed at public safety, has opened a national debate: between protecting humans, and preserving compassion for the voiceless.
