Mamata Banerjee is an Indian politician. She is the 8th and the current Chief Minister of West Bengal. In 2011, she became the first woman to hold the office. She established All India Trinamool Congress after splitting with Congress in 1997. She is fondly referred to as Didi. Mamata Banerjee was born in a lower middle-class family to Promileswar and Gayatri Banerjee on 5 January 1955, in Kolkata. Her father died when she was 17. Mamata Banerjee started with politics early when at 15 she established the students' wing of the Congress in Jogamaya Devi college and defeated the Democratic Students' Union of the Socialist Unity Centre of India. Mamata Banerjee passed his Masters degree in Islamic History.
