Speaking on the Bill which will regulate the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners that was introduced in Rajya Sabha, Congress Leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on August 10 claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central Government wants to make Election Commission as ‘Modi Election Commission’. Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Today was a black day...The Election Commission is the last independent body in the country to hold democratic and unbiased elections. PM Modi wants to make it 'Modi Election Commission'...”Earlier in the Parliament, Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023 in the Rajya Sabha to regulate the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners and the procedure for transaction of business by the Election Commission.
