Norwegian author Jon Fosse has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his groundbreaking plays and prose that give voice to the ineffable, as stated by the Swedish Academy. Fosse, whose work draws inspiration from his Norwegian heritage, delves into themes of human insecurity and anxiety, addressing fundamental life choices.Notably, Fosse is the fourth Norwegian writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature but is the first in almost a century. He also stands out as the first laureate who writes in Nynorsk, one of the two official written versions of the Norwegian language. Although Nynorsk is used by only 10% of Norway's 5.4 million population, it is fully comprehensible to speakers of the other written variant, Bokmål.The Nobel Prizes come with a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor (equivalent to $1 million) from a legacy established by the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. Laureates also receive an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma during the award ceremonies held in December.
