At least 19 people are killed and over 345 injured in violent protests across Nepal, triggered by a controversial government ban on 26 social media platforms. The demonstrations, led mostly by Gen Z youth and students, erupted over what they see as a crackdown on digital freedom and widespread corruption. In response to the deadly unrest, Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigns, citing responsibility for the violent police action. Protesters clashed with security forces in Kathmandu, stormed the parliament area, and set an ambulance on fire. Police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons; the army was deployed, and a curfew imposed. The government says the ban follows a Supreme Court order and targets unregistered platforms used for fake IDs and hate speech. Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung now signals the policy may be reconsidered, saying, “People’s lives matter more than government decisions.” Critics blame PM KP Sharma Oli’s regime for rising youth frustration.
