TMC MP Mahua Moitra has launched a sharp attack on the BJP following the alleged assault on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. In a post on social media, Moitra claimed that a BJP worker identified as Sushmita Dutta was caught on camera pelting stones at the TMC national general secretary. Rejecting claims that ordinary citizens were behind the incident, she accused the BJP of spreading misinformation and engaging in what she termed "competitive hooliganism." The attack reportedly took place while Abhishek Banerjee was visiting families affected by post-poll violence. Banerjee alleged that bricks, stones and eggs were hurled at him and described the incident as a BJP-sponsored attack aimed at harming him. He further claimed that police failed to provide adequate security despite being informed. Banerjee said the matter would be raised before the Calcutta High Court and the Governor, while legal action would also be pursued.
