India has refused to accept overseas donations for flood relief in Kerala. The UAE had offered Rs 700 crore, Qatar offered Rs 35 crore, Maldives $50,000 and Thailand, too, made an offer. The decision hasn't gone down well with the Kerala government With the state's finance minister Thomas Isaac saying the Centre's decision hinged on 'false prestige'. However, India's policy is that it doesn't accept monetary donations from foreign countries since December 2004 following the Indian Ocean tsunami. It believes that it can cope with such situations on its own and its growing economic prowess puts it in a position to be a donor more than a recipient.
