The fourth edition of Kashi Tamil Sangamam (KTS) marks a major expansion of the Union government’s Tamil language outreach through two key initiatives — sending 300 college students from Varanasi to Tamil Nadu for immersive Tamil learning, and bringing 50 Tamil teachers to Varanasi schools to conduct spoken Tamil classes. KTS 4.0 opens at NaMo Ghat on December 2 and will coincide with Karthigai Deepam on December 4. Over 1,500 delegates from Tamil Nadu will join the eight-day programme, which includes knowledge sessions, cultural performances and heritage visits to Kashi Vishwanath temple, BHU, Sarnath, Hanuman Ghat and Ayodhya. The theme “Let Us Learn Tamil” underscores the aim of strengthening India’s linguistic traditions. The reciprocal learning model comes amid strained Centre–Tamil Nadu relations over education issues, but officials say it deepens people-to-people ties. The event will also feature the Sage Agastya Vehicle Expedition tracing ancient Tamil-Kashi connections.
