Uma Bharti is an Indian politician, currently serving as a Cabinet Minister for Drinking Water and Sanitation in the Government of India. She contested her first parliamentary elections in 1984 from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. Uma Bharti contested on the Khajuraho seat in 1989 and retained it in 1991, 1996 and 1998 During Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government, she held various portfolios including Human Resource Development, Tourism, Youth Affairs and Sports, Coal and Mines. She was appointed as the Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister and held the office until September 2017. She was among the leaders actively involved in the movement of the 1980s and 1990s that led to the demolition of the Babri Masjid. In 2003, she led the BJP to a sweeping victory in the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections. She resigned from the post of the Chief Minister in 2004 when her arrest warrant was issued in 1994 Hubli riot case.
