With a few days left for Kali puja, idols of Goddess Kali are ready to be sent abroad from Kolkata’s Kumartuli. An artisan, Mintu Pal spoke to ANI and said, “This year a lot of Goddess Kali idols have been exported abroad. Every year more Durga idols are exported abroad but this year we have seen that even during the time of Durga Puja, many Kali idols are ordered abroad. This Kali idol is ready to be exported abroad to Dubai. Like the worship of the Durga idol, the worship of the Kali idol is also increasing in foreign countries. Most of the people there, worship Goddess Kali along with the Durga idol. Earlier, the idol of Goddess Kali was not getting exported abroad that much, but this year it is exported more. This Kali idol is ready to go and will reach Dubai in a day or two. Orders started coming in when Durga Puja started. I prepared the fibre Kali idol within a week. Tomorrow this idol is going to reach Dubai. In foreign countries, the price of an idol of this size is around Rs 60 to 70 thousand and if it is a little bigger, the price is above Rs 1 lakh.” Kali Puja, which is also known as Shyam Puja, is celebrated on the new moon day (Dipannita Amavasya) of the Hindu month Kartik. Goddess Kali is represented in the scriptures as a black woman with four arms; in one hand she has a sword, in another the head of the giant she has slain. The other two hands are for Abhaya Mudra i.e. protection and Varada Mudra for granting boons.
