The national flag is the symbol of pride for the people of our country. The first national flag hoisted in 1906 and evolved through the years and had taken its final shape in 1947. 1906 First National flag of India hoisted in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1906. The flag was comprised of three horizontal strips of red, yellow and green (with lotus flower). 1907 Second National flag hoisted by Bhikaji Cama and her band of exiled revolutionaries in 1907 in Paris. This flag was similar to the first one but with one exception. It had seven stars denoting Saptarishi. 1917 Third National flag hoisted by Dr. Annie Besant and Lokmanya Tilak during Home Rule Movement in 1917. This flag had five red and four green horizontal strips with seven stars of Saptarishi, with white crescent and a Union Jack 1921 An Andhra youth made this flag and presented before Mahatma Gandhi in 1921 at Bezwada (now Vijayawada). The flag represented two major communities i.e., Hindus and Muslims. Gandhiji suggested an addition of a white strip to represent rest of the communities of India and a spinning wheel to symbolise progress. 1931 A resolution was passed adopting a tricolour as our National flag in 1931. This was similar to the present tricolour with saffron, white and green stripes with Mahatma Gandhi’s spinning wheel. The flag bore no communal significance. 1947 The Constituent Assembly adopted the tricolour as Free India National flag in 1947. The Dharma Chakra of Emperor Asoka was adopted in place of spinning wheel as the emblem on the flag. This is the tricolour of Independent India
