Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces UCC Bill For Assam As State Moves Towards Uniform Civil Law

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state Cabinet has approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which will be introduced in the Assembly on May 26. The proposed law will cover marriage, divorce, live-in relationships and registration, while exempting tribal communities to protect their customs and traditions. The move aligns Assam with other states exploring UCC frameworks, marking a significant step in the BJP-led government’s broader reform agenda under NDA 3.0. Watch
