A twelve-day-long disaster management training program was started for ‘Aapda Mitra’ volunteers at SDRF Headquarters in Srinagar. It was started by Department of Disaster Management and Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). It was held under the scheme ‘Up-Scaling of Aapda Mitra Scheme’. The objective of the program is to train the Aapda Mitra volunteers for disaster management so that their services could be utilised in any disaster or tragedy in respective areas. The program was organised for 50 volunteers of North Kashmir. In this training, 600 Aapda Mitra volunteers from all over the Kashmir were trained as per the syllabus provided by National Disaster Management Academy. The department gave basic training to volunteers on how to do rescue operations in disaster situations like floods, earthquakes, fire and heavy snow. These volunteers were provided an equipment kit so that in any emergency call, they can use this equipment for rescue operations. It got huge response from the volunteers as people are now more alert after 2014 floods in Kashmir. The Government also focused on such training programs to rescue more people during disasters.
