The Supreme Court has rejected a plea to classify defamatory statements against political opponents in Parliament as part of a criminal conspiracy. It emphasized that defamatory acts on the House floor are not crimes. The court disagreed with providing absolute immunity to members for their statements inside the House, asserting that the House is equipped to address such issues. JMM MLA Sita Soren sought immunity under Article 194(2) for actions within the House, particularly in a 'bribe-for-vote' case. Advocates argued that failing to provide immunity for antecedent illegal acts related to House proceedings could lead to defamation charges. The court reserved its verdict after reviewing a 25-year-old ruling shielding lawmakers who took bribes for their votes in Parliament. Sita Soren faced accusations of taking bribes for her vote in a 2012 Rajya Sabha election.
