Clam Collection Turns Fatal In Karnataka: 10 Dead, 1 Missing Near Alvekodi River
A tragic incident unfolded in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district after eight members of a single family drowned while collecting bivalves at the Alvekodi estuary in Bhatkal taluk. According to police, the group had entered shallow estuarine waters on Sunday morning for bivalve fishing when sudden rough sea conditions and strong waves swept several of them away.Police confirmed that eight bodies have been recovered, while two persons remain missing. Rescue operations are still underway with the help of fire and emergency personnel, police teams, and local fishermen. Two injured persons have been shifted to Manipal Hospital, while three women were rescued and admitted for treatment.Officials said all the victims belonged to the same family from Saradahole Harihitlu village in Bhatkal. Locals stated that weather conditions changed suddenly, making the sea extremely rough. The meteorological department had earlier issued warnings advising fishermen and the public not to venture into the sea. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased.
