Pro-Kannada organizations staged a unique protest by standing in the waters of the Cauvery River near Mandya. This demonstration highlights the long-standing and contentious issue of water sharing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. For decades, these states have been embroiled in a battle over the allocation of Cauvery river water, which is crucial for irrigation and drinking purposes for millions of people in the region. To address this ongoing dispute, the Central Government established the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on June 2, 1990. The CWDT was tasked with resolving conflicts among Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry regarding water-sharing agreements.
