With the BJP retaining all four states it ruled and AAP's landslide win in Punjab replacing Congress, the grand old party has failed to make a mark in the assembly elections. After the results, party leader Rahul Gandhi accepted defeat. Congress' poor performance raises questions again on its leadership and its brand value. Congress has called a meeting to introspect on the reasons for its defeat rout. The Congress' tenure in Punjab was dramatic with so many ups and downs as interests and egos of key party leaders kept clashing. As recently as a few months ago, internal disputes became public and leadership change made things worse for Congress. A long-time loyalist of Congress high command, Amarinder Singh was removed and Charanjit Singh Channi was made CM of the state. Party leadership gave in to the state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu. Accepting people's mandate Congress blamed Amarinder Singh for defeat. BJP was headed for a second straight win in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh. The fight was between BJP and the Samajwadi Party. Congress was not in the picture in the state. Priyanka took command of the party in UP and hoped to perform better. But, Congress was limited to a single digit. Congress says that it could not change the mind of the people due to emotive issues raised by the opposition. Congress is surprised over its defeat in Uttarakhand. The senior leader of Congress Harish Rawat took responsibility for the loss. In Manipur and Goa, the party has accepted defeat and said that the party needed to work hard to gain People’s confidence. The leadership issue in Congress at the central level has led to the loss of confidence among voters in the country and as this graph shows, every successive election is making things even worse for the Congress party.
