Amritpal Singh arrested by Punjab Police? 78 Waris Punjab De supporters held; internet shut

While central security agencies believe Punjab Police could have got on Amritpal Singh’s trail sooner, they are confident that he has made his share of mistakes that may lead to his downfall. The central security establishment has been nudging the Punjab government for long to initiate police action against Amritpal so as to check his emergence as a popular, radical Sikh rabble-rouser. The strongest nudge came when home minister Amit Shah, concerned at Amritpal’s rising popularity as radical Sikh leader and Punjab Police’s inept handling of the Ajnala incident, recently summoned CM Bhagwant Mann and asked him to initiate strict action against elements trying to whip up separatist sentiments in the state. A day before meeting Mann, he had met Punjab governor on the same issue.The assessment is that there is a strong case against Amritpal not only for fanning radical sentiments but also disrespecting the Constitution. He had in one of his statements said the Indian Constitution is nothing but a mode of perpetuating the slavery of Sikhs. As police started surrounding his residence, the "Waris Punjab De" chief managed to flee after the police vehicles surrounded his residence but finally he has been arrested by police. Reports also surfaced that Singh entered Bulandpuri Sahib Gurdwara located at Malsiya road in Jalandhar along with his aides.The development came almost a month after Amritpal's supporters laid siege to the police station in Amritsar's Ajnala. Notably, earlier this month Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed law and order situation in the state.The Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt operation to nab "Waris Punjab De" chief Amritpal Singh. Notably, earlier reports surfaced that Amritpal had been arrested; however, the police issued a press release stating that he is still on the run.
