On the eve of Diwali, the Centre slashed excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 per litre respectively. Within hours of the Centre’s decision, several BJP and NDA-ruled states announced to reduce VAT on fuel to provide more relief to consumers. The move will offer relief to consumers by lowering pump rates and easing prices of daily staples for the common man. The reduction will vary in states in accordance with the level of VAT levied. States with the higher VAT will see slightly higher reductions in pump prices. The decision to reduce prices are being seen as a political move by the Centre as states like UP, Goa, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Manipur are going to polls next year. The reduction will blunt the opposition's attack on the BJP as well as the Centre. Congress and other opposition parties slammed the government for not fully rolling back the higher levies. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi called this move politically motivated and ‘out of fear’ as states are going to the polls next year.
