The golden temple in Amritsar is considered the holiest shrine of the Sikh community. On June 6, 1984 the Indian Army launched an offensive to flush out Khalistani terrorists and named it Operation Blue Star. The operation lasted three days in which nearly 500 people lost their lives inside the temple premises including Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale. The Indian Army suffered 83 fatal casualties which included four officers. The Army faced stiff resistance when they tried to secure the Akal Takht which was under Bhindrawale’s control. The Khalistani terrorists had advanced weapons forcing the army to use tanks during the operation. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was informed about the completion of the operation. But she was upset to know that it resulted in loss of so many lives. She had wanted minimal casualties during the operation in which some innocents also lost their lives. Decades later the debate still rages over Operation Blue Star. Whether it was an attack on the faith of Sikh hardliners or was it a genuine attempt to free the Golden Temple from the clutches of terrorists.
