World’s Biggest Thermometer in Shanghai Dismantled
Recently, Shanghai residents discovered that the thermometer on the chimney by the Huangpu River was missing. In this regard, the Shanghai Power Station of Art said on Monday that it was dismantled due to exceeding the time limit and posing safety hazards. However, in the future, the giant thermometer will also return with creativity. There were workers at Shanghai Power Station of Art working in hanging baskets on the chimney. The LED display and modular lamps of the original thermometer have been removed, leaving only the scale numbers. For more than ten years, many Shanghai citizens have become accustomed to its existence. This 165-meter-long thermometer can be called the largest thermometer in the world. It was designed and built for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. It has functions such as weather forecast reminders and light warnings. It is also the world's tallest weather signal tower. However, starting from 2020, the chimney thermometers with a designed service life of only five years have occasionally broken off, aging and damaged, posing serious safety hazards. The aging LED lamps were already blurred long before the demolition. Earlier this month, the Power Station of Art in Shanghai began its demolition. Shanghai Power Station of Art also stated that the giant thermometer will return to creativity in the future. The big chimney carrying the thermometer has witnessed the development history of Shanghai's urban power industry for more than 100 years. The museum also said that it will actively explore the possibility of chimney development together with creative people around the world, using the temperature of contemporary art, actively demonstrate the expression and cultural depth of Shanghai.
