Smoke from wildfires in Alberta and British Columbia caused poor air quality in parts of southern Alberta on Tuesday, May 16. The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued an air quality alert for the region, warning of "poor air quality and reduced visibility." Footage captured by Tadhg O’Connor shows hazy conditions in the city of Calgary just after 10 am on Tuesday morning. By Tuesday morning, there were 87 active wildfires burning across Alberta, and 64 in British Columbia. The ECCC warned that the smoke from the wildfires could cause health problems, especially for people with respiratory conditions. The agency advised residents to stay indoors and avoid strenuous activity. The wildfires are a reminder of the dangers of climate change. As the planet warms, wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe. We must do more to address climate change to protect our communities from these dangerous fires.
