A pregnant Louisiana woman, who was denied an abortion despite her fetus having a rare and fatal condition, demanded on Friday that Gov. John Bel Edwards and the legislature call a special session to rewrite and clarify the state's abortion laws. Nancy Davis, who is 15-weeks pregnant, said that she will travel out of state next week for a "medically necessary" abortion. In the 36-year-old's home state of Louisiana, legislation bans all abortions except if there is substantial risk of death or impairment to the patient if they continue with the pregnancy and in the case of "medically futile" pregnancies. Davis and abortion proponents for months have criticized the state's current abortion laws as vague and confusing. Ten weeks into her pregnancy, Davis found out that the fetus was diagnosed with acrania, a rare and fatal condition where the baby's skull fails to form in the womb. Davis was told that if she gave birth, the baby would likely survive for a very short amount of time — anywhere from several minutes to a week. Doctors advised Davis to get an abortion, but due to the state's laws they said they could not perform the procedure. In a statement last week to media outlets, a spokesperson for Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge, Caroline Isemann, said the hospital cannot comment on a specific patient but said navigating an unviable pregnancy is extremely complex. Lawmakers argued that Davis fell under the qualifications for an abortion.
