U.S. climate envoy John Kerry told Chinese Premier Li Qiang it’s imperative that China and the US work together to address the issue of climate change.Kerry’s meeting with Li followed his discussions with the ruling Communist Party’s head of foreign relations Wang Yi on his second day of talks in Beijing.Li, the party’s second-ranking official, told Kerry that China and the U.S. should cooperate more closely on the “daunting challenge” caused by global warming.Ties between the countries have hit a historic low amid disputes over tariffs, access to technology, human rights and China’s threats against self-governing Taiwan.China leads the world in producing and consuming coal that add tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere annually, while also expanding the use of renewables such as solar and wind power.During his meeting with Wang in Beijing both sides called for more communications to restore the relations disrupted by disputes over trade, Taiwan, human rights and China’s territorial claims.Kerry was received by Wang at the Great Hall of the People Tuesday, after long talks with China's Special Representative for Climate Change Affairs Xie Zhenhua Monday.Kerry is expected to push for a reduction in China’s reliance on coal and setting targets on methane that, along with carbon dioxide, is a main contributor to the earth’s warming climate.As with the U.S. and Europe, China has seen record stretches of high temperatures that have threatened crops and prompted cities to open shelters to help residents escape the facilities.Kerry is the third senior Biden administration official in recent weeks to travel to China for meetings with their counterparts there, after Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
