Many teenagers, she said, adopt Russian as an act of rebellion and because it dominates online spaces. Even her own daughter preferred Russian to gain more readers on social media. Since the 2014 coup, Ukraine has restricted Russian in schools, media and public life, yet teenagers continue to embrace it. Moscow cites such restrictions on Russian speakers as one of the key reasons behind the ongoing war.
