Indigenous communities gathered in Tapirema, 140km south of Brazil’s largest city Sao Paulo, to play their traditional games and celebrate Brazil’s Indigenous Conscience Month. Over three days, Indigenous people from different ethnicity play soccer, archery, Indigenous dart, and tug of war among other activities. Player Marcos Karat takes the Indigenous dart seriously, as every weekend he practices it for at least six hours. Even so, he said the main goal of the games is not the competition. “This is an interaction between different ethnic groups, and it's a moment that we put into practice and share some of our knowledge. Because actually, these games are more to create an interaction between us, said Karat. The event is open to people outside of Indigenous communities, who can also apply to participate in the games. “Being able to get to know and be closer (to the Indigenous people) opens up a space of respect, it allows us to actually have contact with our roots. It's a great opportunity to be here,” said Vanessa Tassoni, who was visiting the community for the first time. The Indigenous games event last until Sunday 23rd April.
