Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg slammed countries for “failing” current and future generations who are suffering the effects of climate change Tuesday.Speaking at a panel at the United Nations climate conference in Bonn, Germany, Thunberg said that politicians are more concerned with “false solutions and finding and creating loopholes which maintain business as usual.”She also issued calls for a rapid phase-out of heat-trapping fossil fuels so the world could meet the target of limiting global average temperature warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.The 1.5 goal is the more ambitious target set in the 2015 Paris Agreement.“The truth now is that these processes are failing,” Thunberg said of climate talks.“They are failing us here in this room. They are failing our children. They are failing all of humanity. And the future generations to come. But most importantly, they are failing the people they bear the brunt of this crisis today and have been for the last decades.”Thunberg was joined by Kenyan climate activist Eric Njunguna, who condemned the appointment of Sultan Al-Jaber -- the head of a national oil company -- as the president of the next round of UN climate talks, known as COP28, in Dubai later this year.“Metaphorically speaking, we let a mosquito lead the fight against malaria,” Njunguna said of Al-Jaber’s appointment.“It's a stab in the back for communities bearing the brunt of the climate crisis.”Addressing the Bonn conference last week, Al-Jaber pledged to listen to young people demanding a place at the table at the climate talks.But activists continue to point out al-Jaber’s strong connections to the fossil fuel industry.Tina Stege, climate envoy for the Marshall Islands, hailed the presence of climate activists at UN conferences on Tuesday.“The voices outside the conference centres keep negotiators and politicians grounded in reality,” Stege said.“COP28 in Dubai must be a safe, respectful and inclusive space that allows for those voices and allows for the right to peaceful protest.”Activists staged a protest after the news conference, calling for their fellow jailed activists to be released.
