A major defence setback unfolded as the United Arab Emirates withdrew from financing the advanced Rafale F5 program, dealing a blow to France and its ambitions for next-generation air power. Negotiations collapsed after Paris offered participation without granting access to sensitive technology or involving Emirati companies, a condition Abu Dhabi found unacceptable. The UAE was expected to invest billions into the program, which is seen as a critical evolution of the Rafale platform developed by Dassault Aviation. The F5 upgrade includes cutting-edge systems such as the Thales RBE2 XG radar, enhanced electronic warfare capabilities, and integration with drone escorts, making it a cornerstone of France’s future combat strategy. However, without UAE funding, France now faces the burden of fully financing the project amid growing military spending pressures across Europe. Despite this setback, the UAE remains a major Rafale customer, having ordered 80 aircraft to replace its older Mirage fleet.
