South Carolina Black voters on Biden reelection bid

AP / May 08, 2023, 15.35 PM IST

Black voters in a key Democratic primary state of South Carolina are assessing President Joe Biden's reelection bid and their alternatives for the 2024 presidential race. South Carolina’s Black Democratic voting bloc, who rescued President Joe Biden’s quest to the White House in 2020, now feel indifferent and somewhat anxious as the president preps for a repeat in 2024. "I'm going to vote for Biden," said Tony Kinard, a 67-year-old flower shop owner in rural Bamberg, South Carolina. "The same way we got him in there before, we have to do the same thing by voting. And we just have to instill in the younger people that they need to come on out to the polls and vote," Kinard added. Biden officially announced his bid for re-election in a video message in late April. For Black voters in South Carolina, the lack of enthusiasm from Biden’s announcement didn’t indicate that he wouldn’t get their votes in the 2024 presidential election, but there’s lingering disappointment from half-fulfilled promises, which was especially strong in young Black voters. “I'm actually disappointed in Joe for a multitude of reasons, simply because I thought he was going to be more beyond just the promises he made," said Destiny Humphreys, who will be a senior at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, the state’s only public historically Black college and university. Humphreys isn’t alone in his view and the recent AP interviews with Black voters across various cities and counties in South Carolina highlighted a need for Biden to aggressively focus and deliver on the pledges that initially excited Black voters like student loan forgiveness, stricter gun control, and economic well-being to better continue that staunch backing should he make it past the primary. The same could be said for Black voters nationwide. While Biden’s approval rating among Black adults has fluctuated over his two years in office, like for most demographics groups, the latest AP-NORC poll finds his current approval rating among Black adults – 58% – sitting well below where he began. Roughly 9 in 10 Black adults approved of Biden over his first months in office. 41% of Black adults say they want him to run and only 55% say they are likely to support him in the general. Names including Stacey Abrams and Gavin Newsom were thrown in the Democratic ring, regardless of age or status. But there wasn’t much confidence in the success of any alternative. "I can't see many options besides Biden at this point," said Laddie Howard, a Leather bag designer and fragrance composer based in Columbia, SC. "I'm going to vote Democratic. I am. But I wish that there was another Republican option. Honestly," Howard said. "Because I'm not strictly Democratic." Biden and the Democratic Party propelled South Carolina to the top of the Democratic presidential primary calendar, over Iowa and New Hampshire, as of result of the 2020 primary—a move Black voters said was expected and deserved. Endorsements from South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn were especially instrumental in the momentum that Biden received from Black voters in South Carolina in 2020 and the same is expected ahead of the 2024 election.
