Residents celebrate as Covid-19 lockdown eases in Shanghai

Large crowds of Shanghai residents gathered along the historic riverside area as the clock struck midnight, marking the reopening of China's largest city on Wednesday after a two-month COVID-19 lockdown. A nearby clocktower rang in June 1st, but many were disappointed to see the iconic buildings across the river, usually lit up in flashing neon lights, remained dark. Still, residents lingered in the Bund, the city's waterfront park, into the early morning hours, some with champagne flutes in hand, others with snacks, enjoying a balmy night outside along the river for the first time in two months.
