A major geopolitical controversy is unfolding in the Horn of Africa after Israel announced its formal recognition of Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region of Somalia. The move has triggered fierce backlash across the Middle East, Africa and global power centres. Hamas condemned the recognition as a dangerous precedent, accusing Israel of seeking false legitimacy and warning against any attempt to use Somaliland as a destination for Palestinians displaced from Gaza. Qatar has categorically rejected the decision, saying it violates international law, undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and threatens regional stability. China has also raised alarms, warning that the recognition could destabilise the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, one of the world’s most strategically sensitive maritime corridors. Africa’s regional bodies, including the African Union and IGAD, along with Somalia’s federal government, have reaffirmed that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somalia’s internationally recognised territory. In contrast, Somaliland’s president has hailed Israel’s move as historic, calling it the first formal international recognition after more than three decades of self-rule, and insisting it poses no threat to regional peace.
