Vienna Zoo announced the birth of two round-eared elephant shrews on Tuesday. The newborns are the size a ping-pong ball and weigh only 10 grams each. “The little ones were probably born at the end of January”, says animal keeper Kristina Stanschitz, “but how old they are exactly not even we can say because they are spending their first 10 to 14 days inside the nest.” In a few weeks they will have grown to the same size as their parents. Therefore visitors will have to be quick if they want to see them at their current size. While shrews resemble mice and are often mistaken for them, they are their own distinct species, explains Stanschitz, “Their closest relatives are actually elephants and sea cows.”
