Several groups of Chilean organ grinders and urban street performers known as Chinchineros participated in the first festival of organ grinders to take place in Mexico City for three days that culminated Sunday with a two-kilometer parade through the city's historic center.Chilean organ grinders brought much needed encouragement for their colleagues and Mexican public.The chinchineros came to life from the idea of the one-man band and adapted in Chile with dances and pirouettes that wowed Mexicans with a great performance in spite of the altitude difference between Santiago (570 m) and Mexico City (2,240 m).Maria Toledo is a fourth generation organ grinder and traveled with her whole family to Mexico City to share their music.She hopes the festival will help to improve the conditions of the organ grinders in Mexico.Chilean organ grinders and chinchineros are part of the cultural heritage of the country since 2017 when it turned from a marginal profession to a very appreciated one.Juan Vazquez, who has been a Mexican organ grinder for almost 30 years, is delighted that Chilean organ grinders are performing with them and hopes that the festival will happen again next year.He hopes these events will create the conditions for Mexico to value a tradition that has been present since the end of the 19th century to the present day.
