Despite being a longstanding supporter of Hamas, Iran conveyed its commitment to offering political and moral support rather than direct intervention. During the meeting, Khamenei urged Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas, to suppress public calls within the group for Iran and its ally Hezbollah to fully engage in the conflict against Israel, as reported by a Hamas official to Reuters. Surprisingly, even Hezbollah was caught off guard by Hamas's devastating assault last month, resulting in 1,200 Israeli casualties. Fighters were not on alert in border villages that were front lines in the 2006 war with Israel, requiring rapid mobilization, according to three sources close to the Lebanese group.
