A royal coin in the making. New 50p coins feature the soon-to-be crowned king. The Royal Mint, the official maker of British coins, has revealed its new range of commemorative coins. The 50p and £5 coins feature the first crowned portrait of Charles to celebrate his upcoming coronation. The portrait, which has been several months in the making, was designed by artist and sculptor Martin Jennings. "The Royal Mint has seen every monarch change since Alfred The Great, and this time is no different, except it has been a very, very long time since we've seen a change of monarch," says Rebecca Morgan, head of collector services at the Royal Mint. She added that for all the staff it is the first time they've struck coins other than for Elizabeth II. "So it's been a really exciting time for everybody to be working on these designs for King Charles III." The king will be crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London. The crown King Charles is wearing in the coin's design will not be the one he'll wear on coronation day. The Royal Mint says the King personally chose to be portrayed with another crown. The Westminster Abbey design on the 50p coin was designed by Natasha Jenkins, and the Tudor crown design of the £5 coin is by Timothy Noad. The coronation commemorative range will also include ounce coins. Commemorative coins will go on sale on 24 April.
