Now in its 13th day, nationwide protests across Iran have escalated from economic anger into a direct confrontation with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the clerical system that has ruled since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. From Tehran’s Kaj Square to the streets of Amol, Esfahan, Tabriz and Mashhad, demonstrators have defied a sweeping internet blackout to chant anti-Khamenei slogans, torch buildings and clash with security forces. Millions answered calls by exiled prince Reza Pahlavi to mobilise at the same hour across the country, even as authorities imposed telecom shutdowns and intensified crackdowns. Rights groups report at least 51 people killed and more than 2,000 arrested so far. As unrest spreads, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued fresh warnings, saying Washington is watching Iran closely. The U.S. State Department has cautioned Tehran not to test American resolve, while Iran has taken its complaints to the United Nations, accusing Washington of fuelling what it calls “violent subversive acts.” With fires on the streets, gunfire reported in multiple cities and global pressure mounting, a question now hangs over the Islamic Republic — Is Ayatollah Khamenei losing control, and is Iran standing at the edge of a historic political rupture?
