Kabul Airport blasts: How a route to freedom became a death trap for Afghans
Thousands of Afghans gathered outside the airport could be seen running for cover as suicide bombers detonated bombs at two locations. Over a 170 deaths and more than 200 injured have been reported in the aftermath of the blasts, with numbers still being updated as more bodies are identified. At least 28 Taliban members are thought to be among the dead. 13 US troops were also killed in the attack, the largest number of casualties for the US in Afghanistan since August 2011. Already facing criticism for the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, US President Biden strongly condemned the attack. Afghanistan’s Islamic State- Khorasan Province terror group claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group has battled the Taliban, which it views as a traitor for making a deal with the US. Thousands of Kabul residents were back to waiting outside the airport, right where the blasts occurred. Evacuations have now resumed and Afghans still await their ticket to freedom.
