President Xi Jinping, in a high-stakes call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has declared that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to global shipping. As the world’s largest buyer of Iranian crude, China is feeling the economic squeeze of the US naval blockade and Tehran’s retaliatory threats. With US government aircraft landing in Pakistan and tensions rising in the Gulf of Oman, Beijing is now positioning itself as the critical mediator, warning that the "window for peace" is rapidly closing.
