Amid the global pandemic, The Associated Press asked children around the world to describe their experiences in lockdown and their visions for the future. Several drew pictures for the AP to depict their futures – from bleak and war-torn, depending on where they lived, to a more peaceful existence that some predicted would be gentler on the environment. A California boy, a member of the Karuk Indian tribe in remote northern California, wrote a rap song about coronavirus, when asked to express his opinions about the coronavirus. One girl in South Africa wanted to sing because she misses her choir while under lockdown. A young ballerina in Russia danced, while a boy in Ukraine used LEGO to show his future of the world — including security checks and potential jail for people who can't prove they've been tested for the coronavirus. A boy in far north Canada has become a news junkie, watching what he can to learn about the coronavirus. So far, there are no documented cases in his secluded Nunavut territory. Often, those the AP contacted were just kids being kids, looking for comfort and ways to pass the time in what has seemed like an eternity in their young lives. They cuddle with pets, play ball inside the house and out, climb on walls and get haircuts from their parents. But their view of the future also depended on their circumstance. A boy in Rwanda predicted, through his painting, that people there would strike and be shot by the military. A boy in rural Colombia said he could have fun with his family, even on lockdown. A girl in Australia, who drew a picture of herself in the forest but still holding a mask, predicted that people would no longer take things for granted.
