Speaking Friday, Johnson called Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes’ threats a “publicity stunt” and emphasised that Grijalva will only be sworn in once the House returns from its extended recess and Senate Democrats support House-passed legislation to end the ongoing government shutdown. Democrats, backed by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have warned that “all options are on the table” to seat Grijalva, citing the special election she won over three weeks ago. Despite the pressure, Republicans are expected to block any immediate move during Friday’s pro forma session. Meanwhile, the federal government shutdown has reached Day 18, making it the third-longest in modern U.S. history. With the Senate out until Monday after repeated failed votes, federal employees and military members remain unpaid, while the House has been out of session since September 19.
