As the 2024 Republican field begins to take shape, White House hopeful Nikki Haley is trying to stand out in a crowded and competitive primary election. Haley, the former South Carolina governor and one-time United Nations ambassador, is scheduled to give a speech on abortion this week outside of Washington, D.C. Haley has called abortion a “personal issue” that should be left to the states, though she has left open the possibility of a federal ban. "(Haley's) traveled to other early voting states like Iowa and New Hampshire, making multiple stops in both places," said Meg Kinnard, a National Politics Reporter for the Associated Press. "(She is) trying to introduce herself to an audience who, while they may be vaguely familiar with her, don't really know her policy positions or stances as a candidate," Kinnard said. But much of the race's early attention has focused on former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is presumed to be on the cusp of announcing his own bid. Haley is facing another ally turned 2024 rival with fellow South Carolinian Sen. Tim Scott, the only black Republican in the U.S. Senate. The potential of a Haley-Scott faceoff is putting some of their mutual supporters in the critical early-voting state of South Carolina in a conundrum as they weigh which candidate to support. "With more and more candidates getting into the fray, that makes the competition for donors' dollars even more intense. In the first quarter of this year, said Kinnard, who added that Haley's campaign posted relatively good fundraising numbers, "especially for someone who hasn't really been a candidate on the national stage."
