Erdogan starts Persian Gulf tour in Saudi Arabia
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has arrived in Jeddah to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Al Salam Palace.It is the first of a three-stop tour, which will also bring him to Qatar and the UAE, to raise trade and investment for Turkey’s floundering economy.Ankara has recently repaired ties with Saudi Arabia and the UAE following a decade-long rift since the 2011 Arab Spring.The visit comes as Turks are hit with sales and fuel tax hikes.The government said the increases were necessary to restore fiscal discipline and bring down the 38% inflation.Turkey’s current account deficit reached record levels at $37.7 billion in 2023’s first five months and Erdogan hopes the Gulf states will help plug the gap.
