Saeed Khatibzadeh, Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran, took a swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump over his remarks about choosing Iran’s next leader. Speaking at Raisina dialogue event hosted by the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi on March 6, Khatibzadeh mocked Trump’s comments suggesting Washington could help shape Iran’s leadership. In a pointed remark, the Iranian diplomat said it was ironic that Trump talks about regime change in Iran when he “cannot even appoint New York’s mayor.” His comments come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran as the broader regional conflict involving the U.S., Israel and Iran continues to intensify.
