41 Canadian diplomats and their families have left , confirmed Mélanie Joly, Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister. "India has formally conveyed its plan to unilaterally remove diplomatic immunities for all but 21 Canadian diplomats and dependents in Delhi", she said. She also said, "India's decision will impact levels of services to citizens in both countries. Unfortunately we have to put a pause on all in-person services in Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bengaluru." India has reiterated that it was looking for parity on diplomats saying Canada should have the same consular strength as India has in Canada. Relations between Canada and India have been tense after Canada accused India of possibly having a role in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. He was shot dead by masked gunmen outside a gurdwara in Surrey in June 2023.
