British Prime Minister Liz Truss told parliament she was against a windfall tax on oil and gas companies and would instead favour tax cuts to grow the economy and manage a spiralling cost of living crisis. Truss was being quizzed on Wednesday by opposition Leader Sir Keir Starmer on her plans to tackle a growing energy crisis during her first weekly Prime Minister's Questions session in the House of Commons. Truss was appointed to her role on Tuesday. Truss retorted saying there was nothing new about Labour's tax rises and spending and accusing Starmer of not understanding aspiration and opportunity. She pledged to lower taxes and to take immediate action help people with their energy bills, "but also secure our long term energy supply." Truss also said she would bolster the NHS though she offered few details about how she would implement her policies. She is expected to unveil her energy plans on Thursday. British news media reported that Truss plans to cap energy bills. The cost to taxpayers of that step could reach 100 billion pounds (116 billion US dollars).
