Recognizing India as the world's most populous nation and one of the fastest-growing economies, President Biden sees India as a crucial partner in addressing various global challenges such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and China's assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.However, differences have emerged between the two leaders regarding Russia and India's ties with Moscow. While India has increased its reliance on affordable Russian crude oil and offered limited criticism of Russia since its invasion of Ukraine 16 months ago, this issue creates some complexities for President Biden. Throughout his candidacy and early presidency, Biden emphasized that human rights would be a guiding principle in his foreign policy.Human rights groups, as well as political opponents, have accused Prime Minister Modi of stifling dissent and implementing divisive policies that discriminate against Muslims and other minorities.
