Angela Rayner Quits As UK Deputy PM After £40,000 Tax Scandal, Blow To Starmer Govt

Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has resigned after admitting she underpaid £40,000 in property taxes on her £800,000 Hove apartment. Her departure adds pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s embattled Labour government, which despite a 2024 landslide victory, now trails the surging anti-immigration Reform UK in opinion polls. Rayner also stepped down as housing minister and Labour’s deputy leader, calling media scrutiny “unbearable” for her family. Critics branded her a hypocrite due to past attacks on Conservative scandals, while Starmer called her a “trusted colleague and true friend.” Tax experts, however, cited the UK’s notoriously complex system.
